Make a Statement with Lighting...

Dining Room Edition:

Light fixtures truly can make or break the whole design of your room. There are a few elements that go into selecting the right chandelier for you dining room that will create an eye catching focal point.
When determining the perfect size of fixture measure the length and width of your room and convert the sum of those to inches. For example, a 12' x 12' room would need a 24" wide light fixture. This will give you the most accurate diameter of chandelier for the space. In most cases, your chandelier should sit 30"-32" above your dining table to allow for proper sight lines.
You must also determine the style of chandelier that would work best with the flow of your house. For example, if you have a traditional style home overall then a contemporary fixture would look out of place.

Here are a few stunning chandeliers that will suite each design aesthetic and make an impact on your dining room.

Designer Looks for Less!

When flipping through design magazines you may fall in love with trendy designer furniture and think, "that is just what I have been looking for." If you are like me, that idea will stick in your mind and you know you just have to have it but when you are working on a budget it is just not always feasible.
Most trendy designer furniture pieces are usually replicated at lower price points but you just have to do the research. Who doesn't love to get a beautiful designer piece for less?

The Perfect Grey...

Grey is still very much trending and finding the perfect shade to match your existing decor can be a challenge. Grey is such a versatile neutral colour that it is now being called the new beige.  I have selected a few of my favorite shades that would look stunning in any room.

Revere Pewter, B.M.
Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore is a calming shade that would work perfectly if you are looking for a warm grey and aren't sure if you want to dive head first into the cool grey trend. This shade would be great to use as an overall color throughout an open concept living space.
Grey Owl, B.M.
To achieve a modern/ contemporary look in your kitchen or bath, use this perfect shade of grey on your cabinetry, instead of a classic creamy white. Grey Owl by Benjamin Moore is a light, cool shade that pairs beautifully with a marble tiled backsplash and white quartz countertop to complete the look.

Kendall Charcoal, B.M.
Have you been looking for the perfect grey to use as an accent colour? Kendall Charcoal, a dark milky, cool tone, creates just the pop that your room needs. Because it is a dark colour, I would pair it with a lighter, contrasting shade, such as Grey Owl and utilize a lot of white accessories (bedding, lamps, accent tables).

Sea Haze, B.M.

If you are looking to create a tranquil, soothing atmosphere, Sea Haze is the perfect calming shade to do it. This shade of grey adds a warm, serene tone to any space and would be a great choice for a bedroom or even a nursery.

Iron Mountain, B.M.
Iron Mountain is another stunning accent colour and is slightly darker and has a more concentrated hue compared to Kendall Charcoal and it is one of my personal favorites. I would recommend this colour as an accent or what I really love to do with a dark grey, such as Iron Mountain, is use it in a powder room or ensuite bath. To complete the look you will need a white or light grey vanity with chrome or stainless fixtures, a framed mirror and white accessories. Always add a pop of pattern into your space as well, in this case it could be monochromatic patterned towels or a beautiful chevron patterned shower curtain.

Whenever you are selecting any paint colour always make sure to look at the swatch in the space you are wanting to paint because the different light sources can affect the colour's appearance. To make 100 percent sure of your colour selection, go to your local paint store and invest in a sample can of the colours you are considering. Actually painting a small test square on your wall will give the true shade and help you decide which colour is right for you.

Every room needs texture...

Restoration Hardware
When designing a space always keep in mind the many textures that can create beautiful, dynamic rooms. A large, braided wool area carpet brings warmth and coziness under your feet and top it off with a cowhide rug to amp up the layered look. Mix in a few textured throw pillows with your patterned and solid pillows. I love the Mohair throw pillows at West Elm. They come in a few different colors and sizes and really add a unique touch to your space. Another great way to add texture is by incorporating a throw blanket into your space. Not only are they very functional, but they also look great layered over the back of your sofa. You can choose a chunky knitted throw for a more traditional look or a faux fur throw for a contemporary eye-catching look.
West Elm
Textured wall mirrors, artwork, drapery panels, chandeliers and accessories are all pieces that can be layered in your space to create texture. Always try to find unique pieces that will make a statement and leave your friends wondering how they can recreate the look.

Wallpaper IS Back...

Crown Wallpaper
Gone are the days of floral wallpaper plastered on every single wall of your house. Wallpaper is back but utilized in an accent wall to either add a splash of colour or an eye catching pattern.

Selecting the right scale of pattern for your space can be tricky. You always need to remember, if you have a small space a smaller scaled pattern is best. If you have high ceilings or a large room then an oversize print will fill the space perfectly.

Graham and Brown
To determine which wall to use as your accent wall, make sure it is exactly where you want to draw everyone's attention. You should be able to walk into the space and see this wall before any other. For instance, in a bedroom, your accent wall would be the wall your headboard sits on.

If you decide to pick a bold wallpaper for your space, pair it with subtle accessories and even try adding a large statement mirror to open up the space and add a touch of sparkle.

Every space needs a good pattern and a touch of color. Happy wallpapering!
